Nearly 40 folks turned out for the Feb. 16 annual members meeting. Thanks everyone for coming out last night to hear about club's organizational strength and progress in the advocacy and trail building areas. The board members want to express thanks to the members for allowing us to field your questions, listen to your concerns, and take note of ideas for future directions. Ken Johnson, BAC President |

Last week, BAC received a North
Carolina Adopt a Trail (AAT) grant of $5,000 for Rocky Knob Park. The AAT program was
authorized in 1987 by the North Carolina General Assembly with the North
Carolina Trails System Act. The AAT awards are managed by the State Trails, a section of the North Carolina Department of Parks and Recreation. In May 2011, BAC received a $500 grant from the International Mountain Bicycling Association and CLIF Bar. This award is given to only ten trail projects nationally which “promote environmental education and inspire conservation in the mountain biking community.”
BAC will use the funds from both awards for “special projects”
of Phase II Trail Development at Rocky Knob Park. These projects include wooden
structures that will be used to cross streams and rocky areas.
BAC has been influential in previously awarded grants for Rocky
Knob Park through bike-specific organizations like Bikes Belong and Specialized. To date,
BAC, Watauga County, and Watauga County Tourism Development Authority (WCTDA)
have secured over $550,000 in grants for the facility. These funds, along with over 2,500 volunteer service hours have created something our whole area is proud of! For more info, read the full release. Stay up-to-date with all the happenings at the park through the Rocky Knob BLOG. |

The National Forests in NC have started a "Non-Motorized Trails Strategy" and will host several workshops in multiple locations around the State. More info can be found at The NFsNC Website. “The intent of this initial workshop is to lay the foundation for this collaborative effort to identify long term needs for managing trails on the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests.” This website will continue to be updated and more opportunities for public input will continue over the next year.
The meetings are open to the public, and several BAC members attended the first meeting in Morganton on 1/9. We will continue to be involved in the process. For a great writeup on the event, see the Rocky Knob Blog article HERE or the photo below. A report on the meeting from 1/9 will be discussed at the BAC Annual Members Meeting on February 16.
If you would like any more details on this or want to provide any input on the trails in Pisgah, email info@booneareacyclists.com.

The BAC Forum has been running very slow the last couple of days. Sorry for the hassle, and hopefully this web slowness problem will resolve itself soon. |

Wednesday, January 18, Boone Bike and Magic Cycles will open their doors after hours from 6-8 p.m. 2012 BAC Memberships will be available, so non-members can sign up or renew on the spot. Stop in and expect nice discounts (even on bikes!). They have some great stuff planned, including light food and refreshments. So plan on giving both Boone shops a visit. Below are a few pics of last year's event. |
